Oral Health Concerns More Common in Seniors

When people are young they take their health for granted.  But as they get older, health becomes a major concern.  Ageing is a normal process, and it is the one thing nobody can escape. With medical technology and advancement today, most people living in first world countries live well beyond the age of 75.  The UAE is one of those countries that has a good life expectancy, with most males living up until the age of 77, and females up to 79.

Because of medical technology, and access to excellent health care in Dubai, life expectancy are increasing.  It’s a good idea, as one gets older, to do the usual medical checks on a regular basis.  Visit your general practitioner every six months or so, or as advised, to have your blood pressure, cholesterol and sugar checked.  Your doctor will tell you what other tests are necessary as you get older – mammograms for women on an annual basis, prostate checks for men, and more.

Dental care is as important as anything else.  Oral health becomes more problematic as you age, and this is why it is so important to look after your teeth from a young age. Parents should always take their children to a pediatric dentist in Dubai as soon as their babies start getting teeth, and children and adults should then be encouraged to have regular dental check ups.  This is a way to ensure that oral health issues are not encountered.

Dental Problem in Senior

Some oral health issues cannot be avoided.  Seniors will lose their teeth.  Seniors will generally need dental implants, root treatments, cavities filled and may experience bacterial oral disease.  At the American Medial and Dental Center in Dubai, there is an excellent team of dentists, dental specialists, dental cosmetic specialists, orthodontists and dental surgeons.  They deal with everything from dental crowns, root canals, dental extractions, dental sealants and dentures.

Most older people will need dentures as they get older.  A lot of health concerns for ageing people are genetic – some are more prone to life threatening diseases, arthritis, dementia or osteoporosis – than others.  Dental care can also be genetic, but it does help to look after your teeth from an early age.  If you haven’t looked after your teeth, or have only visited the dentist on an irregular basis, you do not need to worry.  Dentists see all kinds of patients and they don’t judge!  They fix.  And if you are in Dubai, then the only place to go is the American Medical and Dental Center, to have your teeth assessed, cleaned, cared for and fixed if necessary.

If you are reading this and you have young children, get them to a pediatric dentist in Dubai. Kids really should be taught about oral health from a young age, and they should be taught not to fear the dentist. A good pediatric dentist in Dubai will ensure that a child is made to feel comfortable and learns not to fear the dentist.  A good dentist, one who does his or her job well, will have kids looking forward to a visit to the dentist. And the same goes with adults and geriatrics too.

Dental health has been connected to overall general health.  Research has been done that shows that dental problems can be related to heart problems, certain cancers and pneumonia.  This coupled with general dental issues for the aged, such as root decay, cavities, darkened teeth and periodontists, mean regular visits to the dentist are recommended.  Again, find yourself a good pediatric dentist in Dubai, and you will find a fantastic team at the American Medical and Dental Center, and start care from a young age.

Medical and dental technology has improved enormously over the past few years.  Treatments today, especially at the American Medical and Medical Center, are relatively pain free, as well as being super advanced.  If you do have oral issues, deal with them quickly.

While we have spoken a lot about various diseases that can affect senior citizens, remember that exercise and fresh food are also vitally important.  Fruit, vegetables, dairy, protein and fat are all vital, together with the recommended nutrients and vitamins.  And no matter your age, walk, jog or visit the gym!
